well, the Colorado low missed the city, but the weather still changed dramatically - so I feel like hell today. Looks like I'm not going to be visiting Larry today - it's just not safe for me to drive. :( I always feel so bad when I can't go visit, but I did talk to Larry on the phone today
Larry is officially INDEPENDENT on the ward!!!
This is HUGE for him! He doesn't have to call anyone to follow him when he's walking around the ward. No more buzzing for help to the bathroom :) I'm so happy! It also means he's getting better.
He also no longer has to wear the sling on his left arm - this means it's starting to work and they want him to start using it more. :D So much progress in the past week - it's great!!!
One small thing though - he's definitely up for visitors! *hint hint* :D

Today was a bit of a sad day for Larry. Nothing major, just down because he was back at Riverview, and not at home. However, during my visit, he realized that he now has stuff to look forward to.
Pretty sure tomorrow will be the test for being independent, which would make Larry very happy!

Saturday March 29, 2014 - Road trip!
not really, but Larry did come home for a few hours today. It was really nice, but tiring for him. We didn't do much but watch some TV and have supper, but I was happy :)
He didn't really want to leave here - it's been over 2 months since we had a nap together... so I know what he meant when he said he didn't want to go back. I didn't want him to go back either, but I know that soon enough he'll be home!
When we got back to Riverview, he had a short snooze - he wanted to watch the Jets game. He went to bed when it was 3-0 for LA. I don't blame him!

I went to Riverview early today, so I could talk with Larry's OT
I got there at the beginning of his OT session, and he's doing really really well! he can now lift an item from a table to his chin! Woot! He is still working on fingers working, but they're coming along. In muscle stim today you could see the improvement :D
His speech therapy was pretty quick - and I was a bit of a distraction for him. I won't be in the room again, because it's hard enough without me distracting him
In physio today he was working on balance and core. He was also standing up without putting pressure on his shoulder, which is good. It's been bugging him for a long time - hopefully it starts feeling a bit better. His physio was quite pleased to see him standing up that way. Yay Larry!
He's starting to get some muscle movement in his shoulder, which is great! :D his physiotherapist is also going to start him on obstacle courses, etc to see how he does independently. Which means that he'll be able to walk around his room without having to call someone! no more buzzing to go to the bathroom! WOOT WOOT!
And...drumroll.....
... he gets a day pass tomorrow!! :D He'll be at home with me for a few hours. That's pretty awesome.

Today was a rest day for me. I didn't really do much at all. The massive undertaking of unpacking and moving things around did a number on my back.
I did go and get the kitties a new cat tree, and a few other errands. I then went to my massage - I'm just a bit tense :P But it was good.
I then went to Riverview and helped Larry with his shower. His left arm is starting to come along nicely :D Makes the aide's lives easier, and more comfortable for Larry :) I then settled him in bed, turned on the radio for him and headed home.

Home visit today was great! The OT walked through the place, and checked to see what equipment we had, and what we need.
Nothing we couldn't handle - now to get the equipment. Anyone got a tub grab bar or a side rail? :D
I wasn't going to go to Riverview today, but I got a text from Larry saying he needed some shirts. So, packed up and off I went.
It was nice to see him again. He was pretty tired, but also happy he'd had a good day.

a whirlwind day today - getting everything set up for the home visit tomorrow. When did I acquire so much "stuff"???
It was a short visit today, and Larry's manager came by for a visit as well. That's so awesome that he does that! My manager hasn't contacted me at all in the two years I've been off work.
David brought a Jets night light, which will come in handy - the hallway can be pretty dark!
Larry showed us that his left arm is getting stronger as well. He can almost touch his chin now :D He's also getting a bit frustrated - he would like to make the trip to the bathroom by himself. If he remembers to ask his physio, he'll hopefully find out tomorrow. If not, I'll ask next time I'm there. For the most part, he's got a good memory. But when he's tired, as always, things sometimes get missed.

Today was a good day. Larry is getting stronger, and is more optimistic. He's also looking forward to the home visit on Wednesday.
In physio today we learned how to do a car transfer. It's not much different than a wheelchair to bed transfer, but there were a few things we needed to know.

More and more improvement every day!
Saturday was a quiet day, watched the hockey game... :) Larry is getting more and more into sports again, and he's quite happy about that :D
Sunday was again, fairly quiet...however, Larry was showing me how much he can do with his left arm. He can't quite get the fingers going yet - but that's coming. However - he is working hard on the elbow movement, and is coming along great :D I'm really hopeful for a lot of use out of that arm.
Now that he has some control over the left arm, getting dressed is a lot easier for him, which is good :)

It's been a crazy week. I finally got the keys returned to the old place, and all I have to do now is get the BBQ and stuff once it thaws out :P
Larry has been doing great!
Monday was a rough day though - his foot was so sore he couldn't even put any pressure on it. It sounds like it was a gout flare. Pretty sure it was caused by a change in meds. He asked me what he could do to help prevent it - the only thing he can do is drink more water. Hopefully it helps.
I've been fighting a wicked headache and fatigue. I knew it was going to happen, but I've got too much to do to give in completely. I've been doing what I can (which isnt' much) but this weekend I've got to step it up!
I have a home visit from Larry and his OT on Wednesday. If it's good, he can start having weekends at home!!! And by good, basically can he get around okay in the place. The OT will put any equipment in place that is needed, which is nice. WOOOT WOOOOT!
Larry also asked his physio if he could go to a Jets game in April. She said she didn't see any issues with it, but will confirm with his Doctor next week. :) WOOOHOOO again!!!
His left arm is getting better and better every day. Today he was flexing his wrist! I bet by April he'll be moving his fingers. There's still a bit of "tingling" in his fingers right now - and that means not a lot of control for him. His hand, however, no longer tingles. :D It did on Monday!!
He mentioned today that he's not had a lot of visitors lately.... :P If you've been holding back, feel free to go see him :D

ugh, blech and barf. I hate cleaning out a place after moving. Always so much JUNK to get rid of - but It's alllll gone. :)
Thanks Mike and Lorie! I know what price you're going to pay tonight, Mike, so I doubly appreciate you two taking out all that heavy stuff for me!
So, I was later visiting Larry than usual. He was in the middle of supper, so I just went to his room and had a seat. When he came in, looked up and saw me - his face lit up :D I love doing that :)
We chatted a bit, and then played two games of cribbage. I skunked Larry the first game, and he won the second. He's up to two games now, instead of just one :D
He then did his exercises, with me coaching him. I can see the strength coming back into his left leg, which is great. I then did a bit of work on his left hand. Dont' worry - his physiotherapist showed me what to do :)
Meds time, and BP check. It's still a bit high, but they're working on it. It's not horrifying, but lower would be better. I asked the nurse what the criteria for a weekend pass was, and she said that I had to ask the occupational therapist. Works for me. :) She also said that Larry is coming along extremely well - he's not bumping into things as often and is concentrating better.
Larry said that he felt like he accomplished something today, doing all that with me as well as walking with Mike and Lorie this afternoon. Since it was now after 8pm, Larry decided to get into his jammies. He did his nightly routine, and then changed. He got the shirt on pretty good! He's coming along well.
It was a nice evening together, and something I can see us doing at home... :)

Spent the morning getting rid of a migraine, and off to visit Larry I went.
He was just finishing up occupational therapy, and heading into physiotherapy. I must say his therapist is awesome! Larry did three full rounds around the area before needing a rest - the best he's done yet! She then had him doing some sit/stand exercises. I noticed him rubbing his knee, so I asked him if he'd mentioned it to the therapist. She overheard, and then gave Larry a bit of heck because he hadn't told her his knee was sore. So, she worked on balance with him instead of stairs. He's doing soooo good! :D
His PT also told me that they're going to get a Neurological Ophthalmologist referral for Larry. They are going to see what's changed in his vision. His left-side neglect is so much better - but it looks like there may be a bit of visual issues on the left side of both eyes. The NeuroOptha will tell us.
He then had muscle stimulation, and they iced his knee. It's kinda freaky to watch the stim, but it's for reminding his brain there's a hand there - and also keeps the muscles stronger.
Back to his room we went, and he noticed that his knee was really bothering him. We walked slowly to supper, and back. Larry then had an hour nap. He really needed it - he was soooo tired!
I left just as the Jets game was starting, and Larry was able to follow the game pretty well. He was texting Kodi too :D
I picked up a letter from MPI, and inside was the news we knew was coming. Larry's drivers' license has been suspended indefinitely - until his doctor okays him driving again, and he passes testing. *sigh* They want him to surrender his license by the 17th.. I'll be phoning them and letting them know that as soon as I find it... they can have it :P

weather changes suck.
I didn't leave the house today except to go for my pedicure. I chatted with Larry and he said it was a rough day today - he was up very early and couldn't get back to sleep so he was tired.
Hopefully he gets some sleep tonight.

I met Larry on his way down to try a "brain test". It's one of those games like Brain Age or Big Brain academy
He did pretty good, except for some math. He's been having issues with math lately, but that's okay. We'll just teach him how to do it again ;)
Leo, Donna and I were all there watching him, and I think that made him a bit nervous.
It was a pretty quiet day - Larry said he did well in physio and speech therapy.
He managed to put his night shirt on great! :D And he may not see/feel it but I saw it - his left arm/shoulder is starting to move and help him with that WOOTWOOT!

Today started out with an EEK! I thought I had set my alarm, but for some reason it didn't go off. Blech. So I popped up, showered and ran out the door... to get coffee on the way to see Larry.
I was lucky - he didn't start therapy until 10, and I was there at 9:30 *whew*
Phsyio was interesting to watch - Larry was working with a step and how to step up and down without using a railing...it also strengthens his leg.
Occupational was AWESOME to watch. Larry is starting to be able to move his elbow!!! WOOHOOO!!! he's come such a long way in such a short time... in two weeks, he went from a shrug of his shoulder to being able to bend at the elbow. Still more work, but what a start!!
My doctor appointment wasn't nearly as good. As suspected, the surgery did not resolve the superior canal dehiscence syndrome in my right ear. There is still a bit of hope that the bone he recreated will fuse completely and recover the canal, but at 6 months post op - it should have been better. Still, we're going to attempt to correct the left ear - but I'm not sure how having no superior canals at all will affect me..I'm going ot ask him next week.

This morning totally stunk - stupid headache. But I did get laundry done!
I went to Riverview for 1:30 so I could join Larry with his physio. He did so well! He did 4 laps of the room, which is 100m. Longest distance yet! And then he was doing practice standing up/sitting down. He's getting so much stronger now.
He also showed his physiotherapist how well his arm is coming around. He said he felt a bit like a circus freak, but she said that she has to evaluate, and that's why she's asking...not just for the sake of seeing it.
I was approved to be his "assist" to meals/bathroom so he doesn't have to call an aide, which is good.
Every day he's showing improvement - even though he still has issues with putting on a shirt. We're not quite sure why. We'll work on it as we can, and hopefully it comes easier for him.
We also asked about getting a prescription for the shoes that his dad picked up - they're not quite custom made, but close. They are a specialty shoe :)

Today was a pretty calm Caturday - got up and took Tabby to the vet for her antibiotic shot, and then came home and did a bit of unpacking. Sorta watched the hockey game.
Larry's found that he's a bit detached from the whole hockey thing... he's hoping it's only because he's still having trouble focusing on it. It's also pretty normal for emotions to be heightened and/or suppressed after a stroke. Everything has been scrambled, and it's now time to put them back in order. That will take a while.
Went to Target (meh) and then went to visit Larry for a while.
He was pretty happy to see me... he said "there's my sunshine" :) We chatted a bit, and then Larry wanted to do some of his strengthening exercises. They're coming a little easier, which means he's getting stronger :D yay Larry!!! He said to me that he still has the instinct to use his left hand to do things...I said good - try every time! He was laying down on his side, and lifted his arm up and used his left finger to scratch an itch... still not much control of the fingers, but the arm is coming along nicely :D

Larry's dad and girlfriend came by today to help us do some unpacking. We managed to get the kitchen 99% done.
I then took Kodi to the dr, he's got a chest infection (blech)
I then went to see Larry for a bit. He was in the therapy room, so I got to watch him work. he's doing SOOOO good! he's getting some movement in his left hand! WOOOTWOOOT!
They have a machine there that stimulates the muscles of the arm, and then Larry is to try to straighten out his fingers. He was able to move his thumb, which is awesome! In less than a week, he's made HUGE progress! I'm pretty happy :)
I then took Kodi to the dr, he's got a chest infection (blech)

Well, moving day is here. I didn't post yesterday because there wasn't much going on, and I just had a nice visit with Larry ;)
Today was absolute hell. Kodi and I spent all weekend packing like crazy people making sure it was all ready to go. I was up until 1:30 this morning, and got up at 7:15 so I could take the cats to the boarding place.
Movers FINALLY showed up at 9:15 and got started. at 10:00 am they vanished for 15 minutes, and again at 11:00. Smoke break, I guess. We didn't have a very good crew, that's for sure. The lead guy had to keep prompting them and getting them going. I remember near the end, the two sat upstairs and yakked for 10 minutes, and then the lead guy yelled "are you guys going to just look at it, or bring it down?" yikes.
What should have only taken a couple of ours stretched to 3.5, and then they started moving us into the apartment. Again, a few items at a time came up... and while I understand elevators are slow, vanishing for over 1/2 an hour and then only bringing up a few items makes me wonder.
Kodi went a got a desk/chair combo yesterday, and when he walked by they appeared to be "taking a break". Grrr.. a letter will be going to them, because this is not acceptable. You could really tell they were working by the hour.
They FINALLY finished at 4pm, and I ran out to see Larry. He was happily surprised that I was there to visit, because he was pretty sure I wouldn't be there today. It was a short visit, but he was telling me about his day and how he likes days when he has therapy, because he feels like he accomplished something.
He's walking with just a cane now - only uses a wheelchair to go long distances, because he has to work up his strength now. Yay Larry!!!

EEEK! only two days until we move!
I went to visit Larry this afternoon, and when I got there he had other visitors. we had a nice visit with them, and then turned on the Jets game.
It was 1-0 Jets when we turned on the game, and they won with a score of 3-1. WOOHOO! :D
Larry was in a pretty good mood today, and was telling me about how he was walking well. He also mentioned that he was having trouble telling time on an analog clock. (no jokes! lol) My only guess was that there was damage from the stroke to that part of his brain, and he just has to learn how to tell time again. There's going to be a few other things like that, I'm sure - he knows he used to know how, but can't do it yet. So, we'll learn :)
It was hard to tell it's March out there when the high is -27C. Brrrrr...
