What a yucky day today. :(
I had to be up and out of the parking garage by 8:00 am! They were cleaning the parking garage.
So, had an adjustment and breakfast, then off to get the tires changed over.
Did that, got the claim from December started, and then did a bit of shopping.
Came home, and my spot hadn't been swept out. It was past the time they had put, so I parked anyway.
It's so warm, and I don't have a BBQ *sobs* At least the a/c works!
Got a call from the HSC for Larry's physio - he starts on Monday at 1:45. I hope I can get street parking - the garage is stupidly expensive :(
A stroke survivor's journey, as told from his wife's perspective.

Monday May 26, 2014
A fairly good day today - Larry was feeling energetic, so we went to Canadian Tire to get a couple of things.
Everything we got was on sale (woot!). We picked up a rolling laundry basket, a scale and a clock. Larry has lost at least 40lbs since his stroke!
We started a new exercise with the Flex today - and it's a tough one. Larry has to grasp the poofball, and bend his elbow.

A nice quiet weekend, did some PT and OT. Heard from the private OT, and she'll be here on the 4th of June. We'll see how many appointments are needed until the Community Stroke services take over.
Friday May 23, 2014
Not much going on today - Larry saw his GP for a med refill. The GP took him off some of the meds, as they were vitamins - which he'll get from food.
Worked with the Flex and did physio :P

Thursday May 22, 2014
Yay! Larry's feeling better today :)
Although, he did have a wave of exhaustion go over him. We're pretty sure it's the meds he's on, and we're hoping this side effect lessens in time.
However, we did SaeboFlex and he had success with letting go of the poofballs again :D
My appt with my surgeon was not great - the bone plate that was put in to cover the repair of my canal has shifted - which is why my surgery created only a slight improvement. We're still going ahead with the left ear, but it's probably going to be later in the year.

Yep, I was right.
Larry was completely exhausted today. He got up, had breakfast, and went back to sleep for a few more hours. He did manage to go to Leo's for lunch, so that was good.
However, back to sleep right away after he got home.
So, a quiet day here :)

Better day today! :D
Yesterday Larry said his arm felt 'lighter' and he was moving it easier. However, he's having some trouble letting go of the poof balls again.
I'm not sure if it's his hand, or the SaeboFlex. It needs to be adjusted, but I can't do that. It needs to be done by someone trained in it. Speaking of, the OT coordinator for the private OT called. We should be hearing from someone in the next few days. *whew* If I haven't heard from her by tomorrow, I may call the OT at Riverview and see if we can have her take a look...
Got a phone call that his LTD has been approved, and the first payment will be at the end of this month. whew. That's a bit of a relief - we weren't sure if it was going to be this month, or next that the first payment was. Not that we'd be homeless... but it would be a bit.... broke :P
Larry did almost 4k on the bike today (stationary) and vacuumed, plus OT and some other physio - I have a feeling he'll be pretty tired tomorrow.

Saturday May 17, 2014 - Monday May 19, 2014
Had a nice long weekend, went for supper with Leo and Donna on Sunday.
Learned that when one is feeling good - one should not over do it. *sigh*
Both of us were very tired this weekend, but we still managed some physio and OT for Larry.

Yay!
we have a day of spring today!
Both of us were up before 9am today! :D
Larry and I both feel more optimistic today - and he proved it! He did more "poof balls" today than ever, in the same amount of time. Very few drops, mostly near the end when his hand was tired. :) Lots of physio, and then a good nap :)
Roast beast for supper, and now...another nap. Major fatigue is normal for up to 6 months after a stroke...and sometimes longer. :)

yikes! Wayyy to late getting up today... almost 11:00 am for both of us!
Of course, Larry was up for a while at 1:30am *sigh*
He asked me today if I ever felt "what's the point of all of this?". Of course I do... at least he's getting better... me, not so much.
So, we talked about that a lot...he was pretty melancholy today. Managed to get some therapy done, but not a lot of enthusiasm.

Slept a bit late today, but that's okay. We're still working on a routine :)
During breakfast I noticed Larry looked a bit peaked, but he said he was just a bit tired... so..
We did Larry's therapy, and then went to go with Kodi to his hair cut...we were getting a few things at the grocery store while we waited for him.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, as I found out) the overhead door wasn't working, so we couldn't get out of the parking garage.
I asked Larry to tell me what the hell was bugging him...and he finally did. This morning, while in the bathroom, his fingers started to twitch inside his night splint! Instead of calling me, he went and sat down in the living room. The twitching stopped by the time he got there. He took off the splint, had a drink of water, and went back to bed.
*sigh* He didn't want to worry me... really??? So, because we're not sure if it was a seizure or muscle spasms, I haven't called the doctor. If it happens again, I will.
Larry was very very tired today, so not a lot of physio happened. Which is okay.

Not a whole lot going on today - Larry tried out an elliptical machine in our gym...not bad, but a bit difficult as his left shoulder doesn't quite move all the way yet.
Did 20 minutes on the bike, though :)
He's getting pretty consistent with grasping the ball too YAY!

Monday May 12, 2014
You can tell we're both pretty sleep deprived.... neither of us wake up much at night, and we both sleep until at least 8am.
We actually got up late today, and while we didnt' have to rush... it was close :P
Larry finally met Dr. S - 3.5 months after he was supposed to. Dr. S agreed to take Larry as a patient the same day as Larry's stroke. O.o larry's scheduled for a complete physical on June 3, but we may have to do a med refill before that... I have to check.
We grabbed a few groceries, and headed home.
Both of us were exhausted from that, but Larry had a nap. I've learned I can't nap during the day or I dont sleep at night.

Happy Mothers Day! Sunday May 11, 2014
Kodi made me breakfast today ;) It was nice
We did a bit of SaeboFlex work, and Mike and Leo were able to see how well Larry is doing with it. He's able to consistently grasp the ball, and about 60% of the time able to let go.
Letting go is harder than grasping.
Larry went out with his father and brother for the day and was quite tired when he got home. He fell asleep almost immediately, and had a nice nap.

Today Larry's Uncle Ray was interred in the mausoleum. Uncle Ray died of a stroke in August 2013, so when Larry had his -we all freaked out a bit.
Fare thee well Uncle Ray - may healing light shine upon you and give you peace.
We had a quiet day otherwise today - Larry was quite tired after the service, and had a long snooze. Then another after supper - so yesterday was definitely too much.

What a busy day :)
We did Saebo in the morning, and Larry did very very well! Then some time on the stationary bike, and some PT - working through the home program given.
Finally, we took a small walk to the grocery store across the street.
In between that, I did the mountain of laundry :P also made some soup for dinner.
Larry and I both crashed like rocks about 10:30. In retrospect, we over did it.
Ah well, live and learn.

Thursday May 8, 2014
Larry has been released from Riverview and is at home.
They scheduled him for OT and PT today :D Which is good - gives him a chance to say good bye to everyone. It's great for him to come home, but bittersweet to say goodbye to everyone who was so wonderful.
I got there early, and went with him to PT and OT. His OT was pretty sad to see him go - she wanted to keep working with him, to watch him progress. He was able, again, to grasp a couple of blocks and then let them go :D
Coming home was .....interesting. We stopped to pick up his scripts, and were told, first - that they'd sent them to the another pharmacy, because Larry hadn't used the one I asked for in a while. Second, that "there's no way we can get them done today". So - I just asked if there was any way to get a few days now, and then pick up the blister packs on Monday. That was agreeable, so off we went home.
Had lunch, and then Larry had a goooood nap :) Did a bit of picking up in the apartment, and then off to get meds.
The pharmacy went above and beyond! They got all the blister packaging done! WOW!
Larry did a bit of OT therapy at home, and did pretty good. :)
On to the next phase of our lives....

More assessments today. :)
Larry's come a very long way since February. He even managed to pick up a block with his left hand!! WOOT WOOT!
Very very busy day too - so I didn't stay too late. Today was the last time I had to say good bye and leave him there.... :D

Tuesday May 6, 2014
Another pretty good day in OT for Larry.
I was late due to a road closure, and missed the hilarity. Larry was trying to put on the wrong Saebo.... from what I hear, it was pretty funny :P
Still doing very well with his own "wolverine" :) Consistently able to grasp the ball, and move it. Still working on letting go, but that will take time.
He did more assessments in physio today - he's doing pretty good. His arm is... better, but still a lot of work to do.
His leg/foot, however, is doing great!!!
We were told that his balance score when he was admitted was 29/56. He's now at 51/56. That's an improvement of 22 points!!! Anything above 8 is a... "clinical improvement"? I think that's what she said... so he's done very very well! :)
OT assessment is tomorrow, and then home on Thursday.... EEEEEEK!

Cinco de Mayo ;)
No tequila here... but an AWESOME day in OT for Larry. He was actually able to OPEN his fingers on his own!!! WAAAAAAAHOOOOO!! He's starting to believe he'll use his hand again... which is huge!
I had to run out early because I had a furniture guy coming to give a quote on repairing the dresser.
Of course, they started his physio pre-release assessments. He did great on the balance ones! His score was 51/56 he tells me.
More assessments tomorrow.

Yep, I'm a geek :P
Today's Saebo therapy went very very well - Larry was moving his fingers consistently, and he was actually able to let go on his own!! WOOT WOOT! That's the hard part - letting go. (yeah yeah yeah)
Went back to Riverview about 6ish, and Larry booted me out about 7:30 - he was tired. lol

Did our first day of "home therapy" with the Saebo Flex. It went pretty good :)
We then went downstairs to the gym in our building, and Larry did 15 minutes on the stationary bike :D Woot woot!
For the first time this year, we went out for dinner. Thank you Uncle B and Auntie E :) Of course, we both brought half of our entree's home...
Finally, we watched a movie on Netflix. It was a nice day
I also had a meltdown/freak out. I'm thrilled Larry's coming home...but also nervous about the therapy/medical stuff as well as the OT. We'll get through it...

Yay! Larry got to come home for the weekend :D His INR is a bit low, but that's okay. It's still within the therapeutic range.
Last weekend pass for him... scheduled day home is May 8.
I will admit - I'm a little nervous, because of all the stuff that has to be done... but we'll do it!
We had to say our good-bye's to his physiotherapist today. She's off next week. :( She's been so awesome... I hope the one that takes over is as good.

Pretty quiet day today - Larry got to use his new splint :)
It fits him, and that's made it a lot easier for him to work with it. Larry was finished all therapy by noon today, so he had the afternoon off
We went outside to enjoy the sun (aahhhhhh) for a while, and then I headed home while it was naptime for Larry.
He managed to stay awake for the entire hockey game too! Montreal won, which didn't make him happy :P

Busy busy day today - Larry got his own person Saebo Flex fitted and adjusted. He'll get to use it tomorrow for the first time :)
Family meeting at 11:00 (ish). All of Larry's therapists, nurses and his doctor gave progress reports. He's come such a long way since February :)
Physiotherapy will be at HSC, and we'll get a referral on the day he's discharged from Riverview..which was confirmed as May 8, 2014.
A quick lunch, and then back downstairs for physio and muscle stim. I'm starting to see a bit (very little bit) of movement in his thumb and index fingers. It's going to take time, that's for sure.
