Wednesday February 26, 2014

What a busy busy day and I didn't leave the house until 5pm.

The buyer for the washer/dryer came at noon and paid for them, and they're going to send someone Monday to pick them up :) YAY!

Spent most of the day sorting and packing.  I took a load of stuff to the Salvation Army today, and I'll probably have another by Saturday.  I know I could donate to others, but the Salvation Army has a thrift store right close.

Larry is doing well - he's getting more mobile, and he's getting his directions down.  Since he was directionally challenged before the stroke... I'm pretty happy with how he's doing.

not much new on the arm front, but they're doing a lot of work with it - so I'm hoping to see a bit of progress soon.  Larry's settling in to his room, and the routine is working for him too.

That's all for today :)

Tuesday February 25th

Blech. That's all I can say about my sleep last night... what little there was of it!

I started the day out with a quick dr. appt to get my prescriptions refilled, and had a short chat with my dr.

He's also Larry's family doctor, even though he's never met Larry.  He agreed to take Larry as a patient the day Larry had his stroke... but, Dr. S is looking forward to meeting Larry :D

Headed back home, and started the monumental task of packing... where do I start?  EEEK! We move on MONDAY! 6 days from now! AAAAAAHHHH! *breathe in breathe out*
We'll be ready.

I hired movers, because there is NO WAY this can be done by me and family. It just won't work. I also spent some time today getting the address changes and mail forwarding set up.

It was a crazy day - and to be honest, you'd never know how much I did.  The place looks like a bomb went off - stuff everywhere as I decide whether I'm keeping or donating it.

Spent some time with Larry today - he's doing so well!  They found him a better wheelchair, so he's mobile! :D YAY!  He was showing me around the facility - it was nice. He's settling in, and had a good sleep last night.  That makes all the difference!  Until we move, I'll be spending a little less time at Riverview,  but once moved.. I can make it there longer.

Best news of the day though ... we have to sell our washer/dryer.  There's no where to put it, and we're not planning to move for a while (ha, said that before!) so I posted them on Kijiji.  I sold them in 15 minutes!  *happy dance*

Monday February 24, 2014 - moving day for Larry

I got bunch of phone calls today from moving companies - now to pick one.  So far, all have been about the same price range, but one had 4-5 hours with three guys...that seems a bit steep to me. I just hope the don't quote low and then go long :(

I then got a text from Larry telling me the rumour is that he was heading to Riverview today!
http://www.riverviewhealthcentre.com/

whoa! that would be good... and then it was confirmed by the nurses.  He was scheduled to head out at 1:00pm so I headed out to the hospital early.
Poor Larry - he was very nervous and neither one of us knew what to expect.  I drove down after they had him loaded up for transport.

Got to Riverview and it's a very nice place. Larry has his own room, and own bathroom.  While it's a hospital type bed, it's very comfortable.  Larry had a power snooze after intake. :)
They didn't have a walker for him, because they want to do their own assessment, so he's using a wheelchair for tonight.  He's not great with them - he has trouble getting it moving. He's coming along...but hopefully he doesn't have to use it too much/long.

Larry was not all that happy though - he felt like he'd been tossed into the deep end without warning.  I did my best to help him out, but sometimes you just need your brother. Thanks Mike!  You have NO idea how much you helped Larry over this crisis today.

Visiting hours are any time there, but most of Larry's days are going to be busy.  Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy as well as meals and other things.  It looks like most of the time I'll be heading there in the evening, which is okay. The nurses let us know that they try to get everyone as independent as possible - but please don't get upset if you can't do it.  Call for help after you've tried is the motto.

Now, to pack like a demon...in between doctor appointments, etc.  :D

Sunday February 23, 2014

Happy 16 year Anniversary :D  Today is the day Larry and I met in person for the first time, in 1998 :D

Today.... was a very good day.

First, Canada won the gold medal at the Olympics :D  woot!

Second, I got confirmation today that we got the apartment on Corydon! WOOT!  It's a March 1st...we'll be busy, but we'll make it.

Third, Larry had a good day today!  He was smiling with both sides of his face this morning.

..and walking well with his walker, and talking very clearly.... it was a BIG leap forward today. I'm sure tomorrow will be a quiet day, with a bunch of resting.  This is a good thing :D

Today, for the first time, Larry walked from his room to the day room.  Woohooo Larry! Go baby go!  He was also showing how much he can move his left arm... it's coming along wonderfully.  I'm really hoping we hear about when rehab will be...he's definitely ready to go there.

Saturday February 22, 2014

I must apologize to you Larry - it's my fault you got all confused and thought today was the gold medal game.  Sorry baby!

Today I woke up to my phone ringing at about 8:45 and it was Larry!  I answered the phone, and he said "Mike's not here, I've been sitting waiting for him"...oh dear.  I told him it was Saturday, and the game wasn't until tomorrow!  He laughed and cried at the same time, saying "I'm such an idiot". No way baby! You're NOT an idiot - it's the effects of the stroke.

He went back to bed until his dad got there.  I,too, fell back to sleep for a few hours.  I was just heading to the shower when Larry texted me a few times, and then suggested I head to the hospital to chat with dad. worked for me, so I showered quick and off I went.  I grabbed a coffee on the way up to the room.

Chatted with dad a bit, and he told me that Larry worked on the pattern creating game and was doing better.  I'm pretty happy about that because it gave him a really hard time last week. Progress!!!  I told him how much the damage deposit was, and he said he'd help. *whew*  What I didn't know at the time was that we were going to need an extra 650 or so to secure the apartment.  I think we can scrape that up, but if you could think good thoughts...that would be great!

Larry was still in his jammies when I got there, and he explained that his whole routine was off kilter because of the mix up.  His dad left, and the occupational therapist came in.  She got Larry up and walking for a bit - he did great!  When he was taking off his sling, we both noticed his left shoulder moving.  It's coming along... still a lot of work, but...it's a start!

I got Larry to snooze for a bit, because he was just exhausted.  While he was doing that, Mike asked me to confirm that it was okay for Mike to go at 6am to the hospital to watch the game with Larry. :D

I also asked if I could take Larry for a shower.  The nurse and the care aide were fine with that, but warned me I might get a bit soaked...so if I wanted to get naked too, that was okay.  I'm sure I blushed crimson.. :O
We managed to get Larry his shower, and my socks were completely soaked.  I will spare any other details :P

Supper in the day room with a few games of 31 thrown in there.  I really need a card holder that is about the height if a business card holder, and about a foot long.  Anyone know of a place to get that?

Larry was just about asleep when I left...needs to get  a good one tonight so he can root for Canada tomorrow morning :D

Friday February 21, 2014

Okay folks - we need a miracle.

Since, sadly, our credit is worse than crap these days due to my illness and Larry's job loss in 2009 (yep, 2009!) we may not be able to get the apartment I want.  I'm waiting to hear back.
*talks to the higher power*  I will take every thing you can give me, and I will over come it...but please, a small break would be nice!!!

Maybe I'll win the $50million tonight....oooo... ;)

Not much going on with Larry - he was sound asleep when I got there, so I let him snooze for a while. He woke up on his own, and down to the day room we went.  He had supper, and played some solitaire.  He's really coming along with remembering the left side now...

His physiotherapist had a student, and she said to the student that Larry is the poster child for stroke recovery.  He's doing so well with the left side.  He's walking pretty well. With his left arm, he can resist consciously now, and I can see his shoulder move/hold still when he's doing things.   It's coming along... not as fast as he wants it, but we're all thrilled at how he's doing.

The x-ray was negative for any damage, so we're just making sure it's supported.

Larry's left foot has been bothering him, so the doctor took a look.  While there's a bit of edema, he's going to give Larry an antibiotic to make sure there's no infection there.

We're just waiting for Riverview rehab to find a spot.... soon, we think.  I'm thinking next week... *crosses fingers*

It looks like Mike is heading to the hospital for 6am on Sunday for the men's gold medal final... GO CANADA GO! :D

I had a dentist appointment again today for some minor fillings - no freezing needed!  They used a "sandblaster" to get the cavities out. While I have a mouth full of grit, I didn't have any pain or panic in the chair!  Those who know me know this is big :D

Thursday February 20, 2014

Grrr.... call me back apartment manager! I need to know if I have a place to live! I have started packing now... stuff we're not using, etc.

I had a dentist appointment for a cleaning, and then off to hospy I went. I got to the hospital in time to see the end of the Gold medal game for Canada vs US in Women's hockey. :D  WOOHOO!  And Jennifer Jones got gold in curling :D  It was a good day.

Larry had a good night, and nurseK let me know that she'd talked to her manager.

He's working with physio and using a cane now! WOW!  he's walking much better, and he's remembering his left side more and more.   Larry also had an x-ray today to make sure his LEFT shoulder is okay - he's been complaining of a lot of pain in it...while I don't celebrate his pain...I do celebrate that he can feel it!

I also talked to the nurse, and she talked with the doctor...Larry's on "REAL FOOD" now!  No more minced stuff...
