One year ago today, I got the scare of my life.
I came home to my husband on the floor, pretty much incoherent. We didn't know if he was going to survive the night
A year later, he's doing so well! Still working on the left arm, but it's moving and he's alive. So much has changed, and yet - he's still "my" Larry. The one I married almost 14 years ago :)
He does most of the work, and I cheer him on. Sometimes, he calls me a grinning idiot :P Other times, I'm annoying LOL but, it works. He keeps trying and working and getting better. That's what's important.
I've got your back, darlin'. Always.
A stroke survivor's journey, as told from his wife's perspective.

Botox was done yesterday - no ill effects except a bit of tenderness in the arm :)
Haven't seen any real effect yet, but it's still very early.
Larry's been reminiscing the past couple of weeks - to see if his memory is working. It's only 6 days to the one year anniversary of his stroke. We're actually going out for dinner, and celebrating his surviving it :)
He's shown such amazing progress the past week - I think those small seizures meant more healing... but I'm no doctor :D

Happy New Year!!!
A bit late, but better late than never.
Larry's been doing well - until today. Another arm/hand seizure, and perhaps one yesterday. So, tomorrow I call the "seizure" doctor and find out what's next. *sigh*
Over 2 months without, and now another.... we can handle the arm ones, but what if they escalate?
Botox is on Friday... unless this causes them to cancel. I'll be calling them tomorrow too.

Wow. been a while since I posted.
Not a whole lot going on these days with Larry. he's off of the lamotrigine, and on keppra. So far, so good. no seizures.
A lot of grumpiness though. That's a side effect of Keppra, so we're working through it. I think he needs to talk to other stroke survivors, but he's resisting right now. We'll see in the new year what happens.
Larry's doing very well in OT - he's getting a fair bit of movement in his hand. The "flexors" of his fingers keep toning up, so we're going to try Botox. that will be in January. I hope it works, because he gets frustrated with the tight fist his hand makes when he's trying to do things.

Well, the newest seizure med isn't working. Larry has had 2 "twitchy fingers" episodes in the last two weeks. While we're not panicking about them, we're going to try to control them. So, his "seizure" doctor is trying Keppra, and off of the Lamictal. We'll see what happens.
Saw Dr. M today (neuro-ophthalmologist) - Larry's eyes are slowly improving, which is good. :)
We went out to friends on Sunday, it was nice to see everyone! Thanks Mike for the lift :D
Not much else is new these days. Larry's OT is going fairly well - we're hoping they don't go until Larry's "wolverine" is working properly for a while. They usually only stay about 6 months, but since there's been a change in OT for Larry, as well as issues - we'll be okay for a bit.

A bit of an emotional day tomorrow.
Larry's last day of physio at HSC. While it's a good thing, it's also... sad. it's been a part of recovery for so long.... now what?
His PT did a final assessment, and Larry has improved a LOT. He's up to 541ft walking in 2 minutes, instead of 300 when he started. He can raise his arm to over 90 degrees, and he was at 80 when he started :D
His balance started out pretty good, but got even better. he was at 50 on the scale when he left Riverview, and he's at 55 now. 56 is the best - what lost the point, you ask? Standing on one foot for 30 seconds. How many of YOU can do that, lol
We are going to have the OT start coming daily now, since there is no PT. The other thing we'll have to do is make sure we get out of the house once in a while, since we no longer have a set reason to.

Well, it's been a month.
Not a whole lot of changes, but a couple.
Dr. Mansouri changed out Larry's seizure meds, and he is working on getting to therapeutic levels. This one makes him a little bit irritable (think, pms lol)
So far, no seizures in almost 3 weeks... I'm hopeful the new med is working well. Larry's still working hard at getting mobility in his hand and arm.
I finally managed to get him to the dentist (it's only been 5 years). I found an awesome one! It's the Westside Dental Group. http://www.westsidedentalgroup.ca/
Since Larry and I both have issues with dentists, I'm so happy to have found one that is good, nice and listens!
For the first time in a long time, I'm not afraid to go the dentist :D And neither is Larry! Woot!!
